The rudder is located on the OrbiterÕs vertical stabilizer. It is used to steer the ship when flying through the EarthÕs atmosphere. The rudder controls the yaw of the vehicle. It also functions as a speed brake, slowing down the Orbiter to a speed safe for landing.
